Dutch police to use drones for nationwide traffic enforcement

The Dutch police have received approval from the Public Prosecution Service to deploy drones across the Netherlands to monitor and fine serious traffic violations. This follows a successful pilot program conducted in Amsterdam.

The drones are intended to capture behavior that is difficult to enforce from the ground, such as ignoring red lights, driving the wrong way on highways, or crossing solid lines. The operation involves two pilots: one to maneuver the aircraft and another to operate the camera. Fines are issued via license plate recognition, and photographic evidence is only captured when a pilot directly observes a violation.

Law enforcement officials state that this technology allows officers to focus on providing emergency assistance at accident scenes rather than being distracted by administrative enforcement tasks. While the initiative has faced public criticism on social media—with some users citing concerns regarding a ‘police state’ or ‘Big Brother’ surveillance—police representatives maintain that only those committing offenses are recorded.
