Dutch Police Turn to Crowd Intelligence in Cold Case Initiative
The Dutch police and public prosecutor's office have launched an experimental platform called Bureau Dupin, allowing volunteers to access anonymised case information and apply swarm intelligence to unsolved crimes. The project, highlighted in ZDF’s documentary series “Plan B: Verstärkung für die Polizei,” seeks to compensate for limited police resources and personnel shortages.
One of the first cases tackled is the 2013 murder of 48‑year‑old Marja Nijholt in the town of Oss, a cold case that has remained unsolved for over a decade. By involving thousands of citizens, forensic experts and even artificial‑intelligence tools, the initiative aims to uncover new leads and evidence that traditional investigations have missed.
