Dutch politicians clash over energy policy and Russia
During the General Political Debates in the Dutch House of Representatives, tensions rose between political leaders regarding energy policy and foreign aid. Markuszower challenged D66 leader Jan Paternotte, arguing that high energy prices are partly due to domestic policy decisions and the refusal to utilize Dutch gas reserves more effectively. Markuszower suggested that the government's approach to energy infrastructure contributes to the financial burden on citizens.
Paternotte rejected these claims, attributing high energy costs to Europe’s long-standing strategic dependence on Russian gas. He defended previous climate policies and emphasized a long-term transition toward domestic renewable energy and reducing household reliance on natural gas.
The debate also turned personal when Paternotte accused SP leader Jimmy Dijk of supporting Vladimir Putin. This accusation stemmed from Dijk’s questioning of large-scale military aid and the prioritization of government spending. Dijk reacted with anger to the characterization, warning Paternotte to be careful with his words before exiting the plenary hall.
