Dutch Prosecutor Rules Sophie Straat’s ‘white men’ Call Not Criminal
During the Best Kept Secret festival in June, Dutch singer Sophie Straat asked all white men in the audience to step back in a mosh pit to create space for women and minority participants. Two complaints were filed against the remarks. The Public Prosecution Service Zeeland‑West Brabant examined the statements and concluded that they do not constitute a group offense, hate speech, discrimination, or incitement to violence, and therefore no criminal prosecution will be pursued. The complainants were informed of the decision and told they may appeal to a court. Straat later said she received a flood of sexist, antisemitic hate messages and death threats on Instagram, a reaction that received extensive media coverage and sparked debate about artistic freedom and inclusion.
