Dutch regional authorities advise against Wieringa gas extraction

Several Dutch regional authorities, including the provinces of Groningen and Fryslân, the municipality of Westerkwartier, and local water boards, have advised the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy against approving the gas extraction plan for the Wieringa field.

The authorities argue that the extraction plan submitted by NAM lacks sufficient information regarding the potential consequences of the operation, preventing a careful decision-making process. They contend that the proposal goes beyond a mere extension of an existing permit and requires a new, comprehensive assessment of the impacts.

The collective administrative position of the Groningen authorities remains that gas extraction from small gas fields in the region should be terminated as soon as possible.
