Dutch regional initiatives promote biodiversity through plant distribution
Local initiatives in the Netherlands are promoting biodiversity and climate adaptation through plant distribution programs. In the Losser and Oldenzaal regions, the Groene Loper project recently held a plant market where residents collected edible plants, including over 300 tea herbs, 165 berry bushes, and nearly 3,000 bulbs. This initiative aims to create a greener living environment that provides food and shelter for bees, butterflies, and other insects.
Similarly, the municipality of Leiderdorp has launched a climate adaptation campaign titled ‘Lekker groen bezig: laat groen voor je werken!’. As part of this campaign, the Milieu Educatief Centrum (MEC) is offering free flower bulbs to residents. The program encourages citizens to green their gardens or balconies to help manage rainwater, provide cooling during warm days, and support local biodiversity.
