Dutch researchers develop banker plant systems for aphid control
Dutch researchers and growers are developing biological strategies to combat aphid infestations in greenhouse horticulture. As the use of chemical pesticides decreases, the industry is turning toward biological pest control to manage these persistent pests.
One promising method involves the use of banker plant systems. These systems utilize specific plant selections to provide food and shelter for natural predators, allowing them to establish permanent populations within the crops. While many natural predators must be reintroduced continuously, banker plants help species like ladybugs and the green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea) to reproduce and maintain a steady presence.
Efforts are being coordinated through initiatives such as Taskforce Luis, which brings together entrepreneurs from the fruit, vegetable, and ornamental sectors with researchers from Wageningen University & Research. A collaborative graduation project involving Leiden University and Mooij Gewasbescherming is also working to develop a banker plant system specifically for the green lacewing to prevent the need for constant reintroduction of the insect.
