Dutch residents advocate for intergenerational and senior-friendly housing

In Heino, a recent survey of 259 residents indicates strong support for intergenerational living concepts. Approximately 84 percent of respondents support initiatives focused on social connection and independence, while 81 percent are open to living arrangements that combine youth and seniors. The findings suggest a desire for housing environments that prioritize safety, social cohesion, and proximity to essential services and healthcare.

Plaatselijk Belang Heino plans to discuss these results with the Raalte municipality, Salland Wonen, and BDP in September to move toward realizing a sustainable living concept. The initiative aims to address challenges such as aging populations, youth housing shortages, and increased pressure on healthcare services.

In Zoetermeer, the group JongSenioren Zoetermeer is organizing a thematic event titled ‘Wonen: Belofte of Beleid voor ieders toekomst’ (Housing: Promise or Policy for Everyone’s Future). The event addresses the difficulties ‘young seniors’ face in finding affordable, well-located housing due to market tightness. The session will include discussions with local politicians and academic insights on how housing forms can contribute to health, aiming to clarify political priorities regarding housing for this demographic.
