Dutch sperm donor fathered at least 121 children
A sperm donor from the Groningen region has fathered at least 121 children, according to the Stichting Donorkind foundation. The 43-year-old man has been active for over 15 years, utilizing both official clinics and direct contact with prospective mothers via the internet.
Investigations suggest the donor bypassed medical guidelines by using various aliases and, in some instances, offering sperm through sexual intercourse. While Dutch regulations currently limit a donor to 12 prospective mothers to prevent genetic risks in local populations, enforcement remains a challenge as clinics historically did not share donor data.
The Ministry of Health (VWS) faced scrutiny after it was revealed they had information regarding the man's mass-donating status as early as 2017. Despite this, the man was permitted to serve on a government committee tasked with evaluating donor laws. Minister Sophie Hermans expressed deep regret over his participation in the committee.
