Dutch Summer Heat Drives Rise in Household Pests and Cuts Mosquito Numbers

The unusually hot summer in the Netherlands has accelerated the life cycles of many insects. Experts at the Kennis‑ en Adviescentrum Dierplagen note that temperatures above 25 °C speed up development from egg to adult, leading to rapid expansions of ant colonies and food‑ and clothing‑moth infestations. Pest‑control companies report a surge in calls as ants follow crumbs into kitchens and moths lay eggs in stored food and fabrics.

At the same time, the summer has been exceptionally dry, with rainfall deficits of over 200 mm and river flows at historic lows. Because mosquitoes require standing water to breed, the lack of suitable habitats has caused a sharp drop in mosquito populations, the lowest recorded in years for the Netherlands and parts of France. Vector biologist Bart Knols explains that "when the puddles dry up, there are fewer breeding sites and thus fewer mosquitoes," while entomologists add that temperatures above 35 °C cause mosquitoes to seek shelter and reduce activity.

These combined effects mean residents face more indoor pest nuisances while enjoying a relative relief from mosquito bites.
