Dutch towns expand outdoor cooking areas in gardens and parks

In the water‑rich municipality of Aalsmeer, homeowners are increasingly installing permanent outdoor kitchens in private gardens. Modular systems with worktops, sinks, gas or electric connections are being fitted, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand euros depending on size and equipment such as refrigerators or pizza ovens. The trend reflects a broader shift in the Netherlands toward spending more time and money on outdoor living spaces.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Schiedam has created a clearly marked barbecue zone in Park Maasboulevard. The temporary area, set up on 30 July 2026, is fenced off and identified with large municipal signs. It includes waste bins, shaded and sunny spots, and a set of safety rules that prohibit open flames, require equipment to be placed at least 30 cm above the grass, and mandate proper disposal of coals and litter. The measure aims to reduce fire risk and nuisance while providing a safe, organized space for park visitors to grill during the summer season.
