Dutch towns increase camera surveillance after jewellery robbery in Dordrecht

In Dordrecht, a robbery at the Retel jewellery store in the Crabbehof shopping centre on 18 July prompted the municipality to install a mobile camera unit on Van Oldenbarneveltplein. The temporary cameras, placed on the advice of police, will monitor the area for two weeks to reduce unrest and improve the sense of safety for shoppers and business owners. Mayor Nanning Mol and shop‑association chair Ruud Klijn have called for longer‑term security measures and expanded video monitoring beyond the short‑term deployment.

Separately, in the nearby town of Uithoorn, 342 privately owned security cameras have been registered with the national “Camera in Beeld” police network. The system enables police to locate potential footage when crimes such as break‑ins, assaults or vandalism occur, but officials note that many offences remain unsolved and camera footage often provides only limited evidence. Residents report feeling safer with the widespread cameras, while privacy experts warn of a growing surveillance society and the need to balance safety with civil liberties.
