Dutch towns of Vlaardingen and Stein hold council meetings on governance reforms and new appointments

On 28 June 2026, Lianne van Kalken, a councillor (wethouder) from Vlaardingen, addressed the Walkart community in Zeist about “raadsakkoorden” – an alternative municipal governance model that seeks consensus among all council parties rather than traditional coalition agreements. She highlighted the challenges of political polarisation, referencing recent asylum protests, and discussed ways to strengthen social cohesion.

A week earlier, on 18 June 2026, the municipal council of Stein convened a special meeting where three new councillors – Leon Fredrix, Julie Meijers and Joep Ummels – were appointed as wethouders, forming a new college. The meeting also honoured departing officials with royal decorations, including a Koninklijke Onderscheiding for Meijers and Vries and a Zilveren Draagspeld for former wethouder Danny Hendrix. The council welcomed new councillors and reflected on the municipality’s recent development before looking ahead to future projects.
