Dutchess County and Republican attorneys general address energy costs
In Dutchess County, the Budget, Finance and Personnel Committee has voted unanimously to advance a resolution to extend the current gas sales tax cap at $3 per gallon. The existing cap is scheduled to expire on December 1st. Committee Chair Yvette Valdés Smith stated the resolution aims to support the community regarding fuel prices.
On a broader scale, Republican attorneys general are challenging energy policies they argue increase costs for consumers. This includes a legal battle over New York’s Climate Change Superfund Act, which sought to impose $75 billion in fees on energy producers. A coalition of 22 attorneys general sued to stop the law, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York struck it down in August 2026, ruling it was “simply beyond the limits of state law.” Similar legal challenges are being pursued in Vermont.
