Dávid Vitézy announces transit discounts and road safety updates
Hungarian Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy has announced several initiatives to promote public transit and enhance road safety. To mark European Mobility Week, bicycle transport on regional trains will be free from September 16 to 22. Additionally, a 999 HUF ‘Car-Free Day’ pass will be introduced on September 22, allowing unlimited travel on regional public transport. While these discounts aim to provide affordable alternatives to driving, specific rules apply to routes where separate tickets are already required.
Regarding road safety, Vitézy reported that a recent public consultation received 364,781 voluntary responses. The survey addressed various regulatory measures, including the regulation of electric scooters, curbing illegal street racing, and the potential introduction of average speed measurement. The Minister noted that a majority of respondents supported stricter traffic laws and the implementation of average speed monitoring, a method already utilized in several European countries such as France, Italy, and Austria. A formal report based on these findings is expected to be submitted to the government later this year.
