Dávid Vitézy evaluates new train fleets at InnoTrans
Minister Dávid Vitézy has explored new rolling stock options at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin to modernize Hungary's railway fleet. One primary focus is the acquisition of high-capacity, double-decker intercity trains. The government plans to procure at least 35 new double-decker units using EU funds, which would provide capacity equivalent to approximately 200 current carriages. These vehicles, such as the Stadler Kiss Railjet variants, are capable of speeds up to 200 km/h and are intended for routes including Budapest–Debrecen–Nyíregyháza–Miskolc, Budapest–Szeged, and Budapest–Pécs, with a target operational date of 2029.
Additionally, Vitézy highlighted the potential of battery-powered trains to replace much of the existing diesel fleet, such as the BZ series. These battery-electric models can travel 80–100 kilometers without overhead lines and can recharge in approximately 15 minutes. This technology offers a way to modernize lines without the immediate need for extensive overhead wire installation. All vehicle acquisitions, including both double-decker and battery-powered options, are intended to be conducted through open public procurement processes.
