DVLA addresses licence backlog and fake document crackdown

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has committed to delivering all outstanding driving licences by the end of November 2026. CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey stated that the authority is working to clear a backlog of approximately 444,000 printed licences, some of which date back to 2023. The delays have caused frustration among motorists and difficulties during police checks.

In addition to addressing the backlog, the DVLA is intensifying efforts to combat the use of fraudulent licences and illegal middlemen, known as ‘goro boys’. According to the authority, checks revealed that approximately 75% of licences used by drivers on ride-hailing platforms, such as Uber, Bolt, and Yango, are fake.

To improve accessibility and reduce reliance on unauthorized individuals, the DVLA has expanded its service network, adding 31 new centres to its existing 33 locations. Recent expansions include a second ultra centre in Kasoa and a new office in Bawjiase.
