DVLA issues fine warning as new UK vehicle registration plates launch

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued warnings to motorists in England, Scotland, and Wales as the new ‘76’ vehicle registration number plates are released. Drivers are urged to ensure their number plates meet legal specifications to avoid fines of up to £1,000 and MOT failure.

To remain road legal, plates must be made of reflective material, feature black characters on a white background for the front and a yellow background for the rear, and must not have background patterns. Plates fitted after 1 September 2021 must also be a single shade of black and meet the ‘BS AU 145e’ British Standard.

Additionally, the DVLA has banned over 500 specific registration combinations deemed potentially offensive, including those referencing racism, sexism, or profanity. The rollout of the ‘76’ plates applies to vehicles first registered between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027.
