Dwayne Johnson promotes Disney's live‑action “Moana” ahead of July release

Disney’s live‑action adaptation of “Moana” will debut in July 2026, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui and newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia starring as Moana. The film is directed by Tony‑award winner Thomas Kail, who described it as a big‑laugh, big‑adventure summer movie.

Promotional activities have spanned several countries. In Korea, Johnson, Lagaʻaia and Kail fielded questions from Korean press via livestream, emphasizing the cultural heritage and Johnson’s personal connection to the role through his late grandfather, Samoan high chief Peter Maivia. In the United States, the iconic canoe used in the movie was taken to Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, for a fan exhibition, highlighting the production’s commitment to authentic Polynesian craftsmanship. Johnson also shared advice with schoolchildren during a press tour, urging them to “have fun in the moment.”

Box‑office analysts project a domestic opening of $65‑80 million, lower than previous Disney live‑action remakes, and suggest the film must earn around $575 million worldwide to be deemed a financial success. Despite the modest forecasts, Disney’s marketing push and the film’s cultural resonance are expected to draw substantial audience interest.
