Dwayne Johnson Prepares for Maui Role in Live‑Action Moana Amid Career Reflections

Actor Dwayne Johnson explained that portraying the demigod Maui in Disney’s live‑action Moana required him to wear a 40‑pound suit, created with makeup artist Joel Harlow, because his own physique differed from the animated character. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on July 10.

Johnson also revisited a notorious visual‑effects scene from the 2001 film The Mummy Returns, describing the Scorpion King creature as a career “low‑light.” He noted the rushed VFX work but said the moment helped launch his film career and led to his starring role in The Scorpion King.
