Dwayne Johnson's Broadway ambitions and Moana box‑office shortfall
Actor and former wrestler Dwayne Johnson said he has been developing a Broadway debut for the past two‑and‑a‑half years, aiming to star in a stage version of Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” alongside longtime co‑star Kevin Hart. The project would involve Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller and has been discussed with director Thomas Kail, but Hart’s schedule has delayed concrete plans.
Separately, Johnson’s live‑action remake of Disney’s Moana, in which he reprises the role of demigod Maui, earned $43 million in its U.S. opening weekend and about $95 million worldwide, well below industry forecasts of $130 million. The shortfall could cause the film to lose $100–125 million over its theatrical run, according to industry sources.
