Dwyane Wade discusses impact of daughter Zaya on his view of NBA culture

Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade has discussed how his daughter Zaya’s journey as a transgender individual changed his perspective on the culture within professional basketball locker rooms. Speaking on the ‘Conversations With Cam’ podcast, Wade noted that he began to listen differently to the language and jokes used by teammates, which he described as part of a ‘masculine, toxic environment’ he had previously participated in.

Wade highlighted a significant conversation with his longtime Miami Heat teammate Udonis Haslem. He explained that by providing a safe space for dialogue, Haslem was able to change his thinking, verbiage, and actions regarding topics he had not previously been comfortable discussing. Wade emphasized the importance of creating environments where people can listen, learn, and grow through trust.
