Dyslexia awareness grows in Brazil as millions face learning challenges
In observance of World Dyslexia Day on October 10, experts are highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and structured teaching to support literacy. Dyslexia is a neurobiological learning disorder affecting reading and writing skills. According to the Brazilian Dyslexia Association and the Ministry of Health, an estimated 7.8 million people in Brazil—approximately 4% of the surveyed population—live with the condition.
To improve understanding and support, the School Census began collecting data on learning disorders, including dyslexia, starting in 2025. Specialists note that persistent difficulties in relating letters to sounds or decoding words during early schooling are key indicators that a child may require a detailed evaluation to ensure better quality of life and academic success.
