Dyslexia homework strategies for parents

Children with dyslexia often face significant challenges with homework, as tasks involving reading, writing, and organization can be particularly taxing. Research suggests that for these students, a standard 20-minute assignment may take much longer due to differences in how their brains process language and visual information.

Dr. Caroline G. Richter, an assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and director of STARS, emphasizes the importance of creating a low-stigma, safe environment at home. Educational psychologist Dr. Tere Linzey notes that many students with dyslexia experience slow visual processing speed, which can lead to exhaustion.

To reduce stress and prevent the development of anxiety or depression caused by school-related stigma, experts recommend that parents practice patience, allow children to learn at their own pace, and help them reframe their dyslexia to foster self-compassion.
