Dysphagia in elderly poses serious lung infection risks

Prof. Dr. Ömer Erdur, an ENT specialist at Liv Hospital, warns that swallowing difficulties in elderly individuals, known as dysphagia, should not be dismissed as a natural part of aging.

Dysphagia can lead to serious health complications, most notably aspiration, where food or liquid enters the trachea instead of the esophagus. This can cause recurrent lung infections and aspiration pneumonia. In some elderly patients, reduced sensation in the throat may prevent the typical coughing reflex, making aspiration harder to detect.

Other risks associated with swallowing disorders include malnutrition, dehydration, significant weight loss, and muscle loss. Furthermore, difficulty swallowing pills or capsules can hinder the management of chronic diseases by causing patients to miss necessary medications.

Common warning signs include coughing during meals, a sensation of choking, changes in voice, or meals taking an unusually long time to complete. Early diagnosis is critical for ensuring safe nutrition and maintaining quality of life.
