Düzce University develops smart jacket for disaster rescue personnel
Düzce University has developed a domestic smart disaster jacket designed to enhance the safety of search and rescue personnel during earthquake and disaster response operations. The project is a collaborative effort between the university's Vocational School, Research Deanery, and Faculty of Medicine.
The wearable technology utilizes integrated sensors to monitor vital signs, such as heart rate and SpO2, in real time. The system tracks the wearer's movement and posture; if it detects a sudden fall, impact, or prolonged inactivity, it automatically sends an emergency alert to a command center, suggesting the individual may be unconscious or trapped.
To protect against environmental hazards, the jacket includes sensors that detect carbon monoxide, natural gas leaks, and fire smoke, providing both audible and visual warnings. The garment also features carbon nanofiber material for thermal management, helping to prevent hypothermia in cold conditions. Additionally, the jacket includes an SOS button that triggers flashing red lights to assist in locating personnel in dark or smoky environments, and data is transmitted wirelessly to a web panel and mobile application for remote monitoring.
