Düzce's Merkez Park Transforms from Former Tobacco Field to Major Urban Green Space

Merkez Park, the largest park in Düzce, Turkey, was created as part of Mayor Dr. Faruk Özlü’s mega‑project programme. The site, once a tobacco field and later a modest stadium, has been redeveloped with new trees, lighting, benches and open‑hour access for all residents.

Seventy‑seven‑year‑old local Hatice Turan, who grew up in the neighbourhood, recalled the park’s evolution: “It used to be a tobacco field, then a stadium with low walls. Over time the walls rose, doors were added and later closed, ending the activities. Now it is bright, green and open to everyone.” Turan also praised the connection of Merkez Park to the newly planned Millet Bahçesi (formerly Maarif Field) via a Green Way, turning the area into a communal hub for the whole city.
