Dze L’Kant Friendship Centre opens new Indigenous service facilities in Houston
On August 19, 2026, twin ceremonies were held to mark the official opening of new Indigenous service facilities in Houston, British Columbia. The expansion includes the Dze L’Kant Friendship Centre’s Cub House childcare centre and a new purpose-built building designed for administration and community services.
Executive Director Nox Stikine (Annette Morgan) stated that the new spaces are intended to help children grow in their identity and provide a gathering place for the community. She described the facility as a testament to the lived practice of reconciliation.
The project was the result of five years of planning and collaboration. Funding and support were provided by a wide range of contributors, including the District of Houston, the federal and provincial Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Northern Development Initiative Trust, and various Indigenous associations. Westwind Enterprises served as the primary construction partner for the Bulkley Valley area.
