Dzibilchaltún Community Tourist Stop proposed to boost Maya economy

Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada has introduced a proposal for the first Community Tourist Stop in Dzibilchaltún. The project is designed to integrate local Maya communities into the regional tourism sector by providing dedicated spaces for the sale of handicrafts, traditional food, and cultural activities.

The initiative was developed through community dialogue and architectural proposals from students at the Marista University of Mérida. The city administration intends to include the project in the 2027 municipal budget. Implementation will require coordination with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the Yucatán state government, and local business chambers.

This development aims to distribute economic benefits directly to local artisans, merchants, and tour operators. The project comes as Mérida continues to attract significant tourism investment, with the city currently accounting for 40% of the state's private tourism investment.
