E-bike and e-scooter injuries rise amid growing safety concerns
The rising popularity of electric bicycles and scooters in the United States is being linked to an increase in serious injuries and safety incidents. Research presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2026 National Conference indicates that e-bike and e-scooter injuries among children and teens at a California hospital rose nearly four-fold between 2019 and 2025.
While e-scooters account for a higher volume of cases, e-bike injuries are reported to be more severe. Data shows e-bike riders are more likely to suffer concussions, fractures, and life-threatening injuries requiring surgery or hospitalization. Common injury sites include the upper extremities, lower extremities, and the head.
Beyond collision risks, lithium-ion battery failures have caused spontaneous fires in residential settings. In response to growing safety concerns, the District Attorney’s Office of Orange County, California, has scheduled an e-bike and e-motorcycle buyback program for September to mitigate risks.
