E-bike battery maintenance and winter storage guidelines

Proper maintenance and storage of e-bike batteries are essential for preserving lifespan and ensuring safety, particularly when purchasing used components or preparing for winter storage.

To determine the health of a used battery, users should calculate its remaining capacity by dividing the measured capacity by the nominal capacity. Experts suggest that e-bike batteries typically last between 500 and 1,000 charge cycles, roughly three to five years. Replacement is generally recommended when capacity drops below 70% to 80%. Replacement costs can range from 300 to 1,500 euros, excluding potential labor and software update fees.

For winter storage, it is recommended to store the battery indoors at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius to avoid damage from freezing. Batteries should be charged to approximately 75% before storage, and the charge level should be checked periodically. Additionally, cleaning the bike frame and protecting contacts with contact grease can help prevent rust and ensure long-term functionality.
