E-bike safety and maintenance: Tips for riding and winter storage

E-bike users face specific safety and maintenance challenges, according to guidance regarding operation and seasonal storage.

The German Road Safety Council (DVR) warns that both beginners and experienced riders often underestimate the rapid acceleration and power of pedelecs. Common mistakes include applying too much pressure to the pedals immediately upon starting, which can lead to a loss of control, and failing to adjust speed to the surrounding traffic density. Additionally, because e-bikes are generally heavier than traditional bicycles, riders must account for longer braking distances.

For winter storage, it is recommended to protect the bicycle from rain and snow in a garage or cellar. To prevent tire damage, a temperature of approximately 15 degrees Celsius is ideal. Most importantly, the battery should be removed and stored indoors at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. It is advised to charge the battery to about 75% capacity and periodically check the charge level to ensure longevity.
