E-bike safety and maintenance trends in Germany

As the popularity of e-bikes and pedelecs continues to grow, new guidelines and safety technologies are emerging for cyclists. According to the Auto Club Europa (ACE), buyers of used electric bicycles should pay close attention to specific components that wear out faster than on traditional bikes, such as the chain, brakes, and tires. Experts recommend conducting a thorough visual inspection and test ride, specifically checking the motor for irregular noises or inconsistent power delivery, and ensuring the frame geometry allows for a comfortable fit.

In terms of safety, new regulations in Germany (StVZO § 67) now permit turn signals on all bicycles, a move intended to reduce accidents by allowing riders to keep both hands on the handlebars during turns. While the ADFC supports this change, they note that indicators should not replace the habit of looking around. Various retrofit options are available, such as the Busch+Müller Turntec, which can be connected to e-bike batteries to provide easy-to-use signaling.
