E. coli levels in rivers and lakes linked to health risks

A study involving nearly 2,400 participants in Hungary indicates that wild swimming in rivers and lakes poses significant health risks, including gastrointestinal issues and skin problems.

Researchers found that approximately 2.1 percent of swimmers reported symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or nausea one week after exposure, compared to 1.9 percent in a control group. Skin issues, including rashes, ulcers, and itching, were twice as common among swimmers than those who remained on the shore. While skin problems could not be directly linked to fecal bacteria, researchers suggest algae or parasites may be contributing factors.

The findings challenge current World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, which suggest focusing primarily on enterococci for freshwater monitoring. The study suggests a more direct link between E. coli levels and illness. Professor Paul Hunter of the University of East Anglia noted that E. coli should remain a standard part of monitoring for inland waters.
