E-commerce platforms see rise in quirky and unconventional product trends

E-commerce platforms are seeing a surge in popularity for unconventional and quirky products as consumers seek items that offer humor, individuality, and self-expression.

On China’s Taobao, an Alibaba Group platform, sales of products categorized as “ugly” or bizarre have exceeded 230 million yuan (approximately US$34.3 million) since 2020. This trend is driven largely by young consumers and small-to-medium enterprises. To celebrate this niche, Taobao launched the “Uglies Award” and is hosting its second “Treasured Uglies Art Exhibition” in Hangzhou. Examples of these products include 3D collectible figures inspired by ancient Dunhuang cave murals.

Similarly, on Amazon in the United States, various unconventional items have gone viral. Trending products include miniature working record players, cheese cracker-shaped pillows, scented butter-shaped fidget toys, and Tetris-style modular night-lights.
