Polish retail market sees intense price competition
Retailers in Poland are engaging in intense price competition across various sectors. A study by Modvise regarding the e-commerce market found that Allegro offered lower prices than major online retailers in approximately 77% of nearly 29,000 product comparisons. The total cost of a basket of bestsellers on Allegro was, on average, 11.7% lower than at analyzed competitors.
In the physical retail sector, discount stores like Biedronka and Lidl are leading the competition for back-to-school supplies. Analysis shows that a basic school kit is significantly cheaper at Biedronka and Lidl compared to other chains like Carrefour or Kaufland. While the average price index for school shopping baskets has risen by 6.3% year-over-year, the lowest available prices in the market have actually decreased.
Additionally, Biedronka has launched a '2+2 gratis' promotion on textiles, toys, and books, while Lidl has initiated large-scale sales with discounts reaching up to 50% on non-food items. Meanwhile, broader economic data indicates that while the growth rate of daily grocery prices is slowing, experts warn that factors such as lower crop yields and geopolitical uncertainty could influence future costs.
