E Hospital warns of kidney damage from improper stone treatment
The Urology and Andrology Department at E Hospital in Vietnam recently performed kidney removal surgeries on three patients due to non-functional kidneys caused by kidney stones. Medical professionals noted that these cases often stem from patient misunderstandings regarding the disease, inappropriate treatments, or delayed medical intervention.
A significant issue identified is the misconception that traditional herbal medicine can dissolve kidney stones. In one case, a 67-year-old male believed his stones had shrunk from 22 mm to 14 mm after using traditional remedies. However, CT scans revealed the stone actually had irregular dimensions of 20 x 19 x 14 mm, suggesting the perceived reduction was merely a variation in ultrasound measurement angles rather than actual shrinkage.
Dr. Mai Van Luc warned against the self-administration of traditional medicines with unknown origins or ingredients, as delaying professional medical evaluation can lead to severe, irreversible kidney damage.
