E Ink announces Kaleido 4 color display technology

E Ink has unveiled Kaleido 4, the next generation of its color electronic paper technology designed for e-readers and writing tablets. The new display aims to address common criticisms of color e-ink screens, such as washed-out colors, grayish text, and slow refresh rates.

Key technical improvements include doubling the color gamut volume, increasing contrast by 50%, and enhancing white reflectance by 15%. The technology also supports refresh rates of up to 18 frames per second, enabling the display of simple video content. While the color palette remains limited to 4,096 colors, the enhancements are intended to produce more vivid images and clearer black-and-white text compared to the previous Kaleido 3 generation.

The Hanvon M10C II, a note-taking tablet available exclusively in China, will be the first device to feature this new screen.
