E-scooter collisions in Canada cause serious injuries and death

Recent e-scooter collisions in Canada have resulted in serious injuries and a fatality, prompting calls for increased safety measures and regulation.

In Vancouver, comedian Jessica Pigeau is advocating for helmet use after a collision with an SUV left her with only light bruising because she was wearing head protection. This follows the death of 30-year-old Shyan Lolly in July, who died from injuries sustained in an e-scooter collision while not wearing a helmet. The Community Against Preventable Injuries notes that British Columbia has seen approximately 175 to 180 adult-related scooter injuries requiring hospitalization in recent years.

In Winnipeg, a longtime volunteer for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was seriously injured after being struck by an e-scooter on a sidewalk outside Princess Auto Stadium. The victim required emergency neck surgery, including the insertion of titanium rods into his spine, and faces a long rehabilitation process. While police services in both cities do not currently maintain specific statistics for personal electric vehicles, officials expect reports to increase as scooter popularity grows.
