E-scooter trauma admissions nearly double in two years
National analyses presented at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress indicate that e-scooter trauma admissions nearly doubled between 2021 and 2023. Data from over 10,000 admissions shows a 92% increase, rising from 2,311 cases in 2021 to 4,430 in 2023.
Research from Howard University Hospital highlights that while 85% of injuries were classified as minor or moderate, 16.2% of patients required ICU admission and 11.3% underwent surgery. Helmet use was documented in only 12.1% of cases. The studies found that riders under the age of 16 were particularly susceptible to severe injuries, and factors such as lack of helmet use and obesity were linked to higher risks of ICU admission.
