E2C unions demand removal of director general amid power cuts
Labor unions at Énergie électrique du Congo (E2C), the Republic of Congo’s public power utility, are demanding the immediate removal of Director General Jean-Bruno Danga Adou. The workers' representative body, known as the Collège syndical, issued a statement citing poor management and the intensification of electricity shortages in Brazzaville.
The power outages have caused significant disruption in the capital, with reports indicating that two-thirds of Brazzaville is deprived of electricity daily. The unions noted that these blackouts lead to food spoilage, damage to household appliances, and the cessation of artisanal activities.
While the government under President Denis Sassou-Nguesso has invested heavily in energy infrastructure, including high-voltage transmission lines and generation units, critics argue that governance has failed to keep pace. Specific concerns were raised regarding the lack of maintenance for the Imboulou hydroelectric dam and allegations of repeated misappropriation of company funds.
