Eagle County clears mudslides and boulders from Sweetwater and Colorado River roads
Eagle County officials initiated clean-up operations on Sweetwater Road and Colorado River Road following heavy rainfall that triggered mudslides and boulder blockages. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings on Sunday, leading to the temporary closure of both roads between approximately 1:30 pm and 6:20 pm to allow sheriff’s office and road crews to clear debris.
No injuries or individuals trapped in the mudslides were reported, though significant deposits of rocks and mud obstructed travel. Local residents and the Sweetwater Lake Working Group noted that several areas, including gulches near Hell’s Gate, became impassable due to large boulders. The incident occurred amid ongoing local discussions regarding the potential conversion of the 846-acre Sweetwater Lake area into a state park.
