Eagle flight development and fledging milestones

The developmental journey of an eagle from hatching to flight is a multi-week process involving several critical biological milestones. After an incubation period of approximately 35 days, eaglets hatch in a helpless state, relying entirely on parents for warmth, protection, and food.

As they grow, pin feathers begin to emerge around three weeks of age. To prepare for flight, eaglets engage in wing exercises within the nest to strengthen muscles and eventually begin 'branching,' which involves venturing onto nearby branches. Most eaglets undergo fledging—their first flight—between 10 and 14 weeks of age. Following this initial flight, a period of post-fledging development is required to refine aerial skills and instincts necessary for survival in the wild.
