Earl Spencer compares media treatment of Harry and Meghan to Princess Diana
Earl Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, has drawn parallels between the media treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the experiences of his sister. In a BBC interview, Spencer described the current press coverage of the couple as having a “cancerous effect” on their lives, suggesting that the public should learn from the devastating impact media scrutiny had on Diana.
In his upcoming memoirs, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” scheduled for release in September 2026, Spencer also expressed “eternal regret” regarding his role in the 1995 Panorama interview conducted by Martin Bashir. He noted that while he grew suspicious of Bashir’s credibility and warned Diana, he was unable to prevent her from proceeding with the interview that shook the British monarchy.
Spencer clarified that his stance is not strictly political but rather a commitment to supporting his sister’s children. His comments follow recent discussions regarding the royal family and the media environment, which Harry and Meghan have previously characterized as “toxic.”
