Early Bedtime Crucial for Child Brain Development, Researchers Say

Recent neurological research highlights that the timing of children’s sleep has profound effects on brain development. Babies and toddlers experience rapid neural growth, and sleep acts as an active biological process that consolidates daytime learning and strengthens neural connections. The study, reviewed by Karen Spruyt and published in Nature, emphasizes the first year of life as the most critical period, recommending that infants receive ample, regular sleep.

Insufficient or irregular sleep in early years can disrupt neural network formation, leading to lasting cognitive deficits, attention problems, learning difficulties, and emotional instability. Chronic sleep deprivation may therefore have long‑term consequences for academic performance and social functioning. Parents are urged to establish consistent bedtime routines to support optimal neurodevelopment.
