Early voting trends show rising participation and party enthusiasm shifts

Early voting trends indicate a significant shift in American electoral patterns, with early and absentee voting becoming a normalized part of the process. Data from the Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR) shows a rising trend in early participation, which reached 61% in 2024. Notably, in-person early voting has recently surpassed absentee ballots in volume.

In the current cycle, early voting data suggests a potential enthusiasm gap between political parties. In several states, including Iowa, Pennsylvania, Maine, and North Carolina, Democrats have accounted for a higher percentage of ballot requests compared to previous cycles. For instance, Democrats made up 67% of ballot requests in Iowa.

In Texas, Democratic primary turnout has seen a substantial shift, with 2.3 million votes cast compared to 2.2 million from Republicans, a reversal from previous years when Republicans outpaced Democrats by significant margins. Additionally, early turnout data in Virginia shows higher participation rates in areas that previously favored Democratic candidates compared to areas that supported Republican candidates.
