Early winter conditions reported at ski resorts in Colorado and Spain
Early signs of winter are appearing at ski resorts in both the United States and Spain. In Aspen Snowmass, Colorado, a section of the Snowmass terrain park, Makaha Park, opened on October 3 to allow snowboarders and skiers to use ramps and rails despite the surrounding autumn foliage.
To facilitate this early opening, Aspen Snowmass utilized “snow farming” technology known as Snow Secure. This method involves covering millions of gallons of snow with large insulating blankets for approximately four months during the summer to prevent melting from high temperatures.
In Spain, the Astún ski station in the Aragonese Pyrenees has recorded its first snowfalls of the season at altitudes near 2,000 meters. While the official season typically begins in late November or early December, these early snows mark a significant start for the region. The Astún and Candanchú joint domain plans to introduce a new four-seater chairlift in the La Raca area this year.
