Earth Overshoot Day 2026 falls on July 30, marking the point when global resource demand exceeds what Earth can regenerate in a year. The Global Footprint Network calculates that humanity now consumes the equivalent of 1.73 planets, creating an accumulated ecological debt of about 20.6 years of regenerative capacity.
WWF Italy warns that cities—covering only 3 % of the planet’s surface—account for roughly 75 % of energy use, 70 % of greenhouse‑gas emissions and generate over 80 % of global GDP. Eva Alessi, WWF Italy’s sustainability lead, says urban action on renewable energy, efficient buildings, circular economies and greener diets can shift the date by dozens of days. Solutions such as renewable‑energy transition, reduced food waste and circular fashion together could add up to a month or more of margin.
Austria already reached its national Overshoot Day on April 2, highlighting the variation among countries. Environmental experts like Paul Hawken stress that the same measures needed to curb climate change also meet humanity’s basic needs.
