Earthquake hits Santa Maria Island in the Azores

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred on Saturday on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores. The tremor was recorded at 10:54 local time, with its epicenter located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Santa Bárbara.

According to the Azores Seismovulcanological Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA), the earthquake reached a maximum intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli Scale in Vila do Porto and Almagreira. At this intensity level, the shaking is considered weak and is typically felt indoors, often described as a vibration similar to heavy vehicles passing by.
