Colombia earthquake relief: International aid and hospital ship deployment

Colombia is mobilizing large-scale relief efforts following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10, which centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó. The disaster has resulted in over 275 deaths and left more than 360 people missing.

International humanitarian aid has reached 222.5 tons, with significant contributions from El Salvador, Mexico, Chile, and Peru. Total international cooperation offers are reported to exceed US$1.3 billion. Specialized teams from Israel, Ecuador, and the United States are also providing on-the-ground support.

In response to the crisis, President Abelardo De La Espriella has reactivated the Benkos Biohó hospital ship to provide surgical and medical care to isolated Pacific coast communities, including Buenaventura. Additionally, the ARC Bahía Colombia is transporting essential supplies to affected families.

Private sector support includes a 150,000 million peso donation from Jaime Gilinski and his wife for the reconstruction of Cali. Meanwhile, singer Shakira is scheduled to visit Quibdó to assess damage and announce humanitarian aid for the region.
